BRITISH TRAINERs with recent FLAT gR.1 winners

The father-son duo had more horses rated 120 or above than any other trainer in 2023 and trained Europe’s joint best-racehorse Mostahdaf. They won 10 Gr.1s with seven horses across four countries and were Britain’s Champion Trainer. Between February and November 2023, they trained 35 Stakes winners, including 17 individual winners for 11 international owners. Their roll of honour in 2024 includes Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes and more recently Gr.1 Prix de l'Opera.

Roger Varian averages two Gr.1 wins per year since he began training. This year, he won Gr.1 1000 Guineas Stakes with Elmalka for Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum in May before taking Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, Gr.1 Prix Jacques Le Marois and Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on British Champions Day at Ascot for Kazakh owner Nurlan Bizakov. In 2023 he won Gr.1 races for Sheikha Hissa’s Shadwell operation, Sheikh Khalid’s KHK Racing and Amo Racing. Roger has won Gr.1 races across Britain, the UAE, the USA, Canada, France and Ireland.

Richard Hannon

Richard Hannon has trained 16 Gr.1 winners in the 10 years that he has been training, with the latest one coming in at Royal Ascot when Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner and Irish 2000 Guineas winner Rosallion confirmed his talent in the St James's Palace Stakes for UAE-based Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum. Richard also won Group races for Kuwaiti and Indian owners in 2023.

Karl Burke

Karl Burke ended 2023 with 25 Stakes wins. He trained big race winners for owners from the UAE & China and secured two Gr.1 victories with Fallen Angel and Poptronic. Karl also kicked off 2024 strongly, winning Gr.1 Irish 1000 Guineas with Fallen Angel and Gr.2 German 1000 Guineas with Darnation. He was also the leading trainer of two-year-olds in Britain last year, and recently showcased his strength with juveniles when winning Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes & Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.

William Haggas

After a spectacular 2022 with world's best racehorse Baaeed, William Haggas added three more Gr.1 races to his résumé in 2023. He won two Gr.1 races in Australia with Dubai Honour for Emirati owner Mohamed Obaida and added another in September when Sea Silk Road cruised to victory in the Prix de Royallieu for Hong Kong's Tsui family. In 2024, Dubai Honour added a third Gr.1 to his resumé when winning the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and rising star Economics triumphed in Gr.1 Irish Champions Stakes. The trainer also won the valuable Golden Eagle sprint in Australia recently with Lake Forest.

Owen Burrows

Despite only starting his training career in 2016, Owen Burrows has already won nearly 30 Group races. He won Gr.1 Champion Stakes in October at Ascot Racecourse for Sheikha Hissa's Shadwell entity, courtesy of Anmaat. Owen had already won two Gr.1 races in 2023 for Shadwell with Anmaat in the Prix d'Ispahan in May and Hukum the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July. Hukum's victory at Ascot earned him a spot in the world's best five racehorses of 2023.

Andrew Balding

Andrew Balding won the first Classic of the 2023 season with Chaldean for Juddmonte Farms. This was the second 2000 Guineas Stakes victory for the trainer in four years after Kameko in 2020 for Qatar Racing. The trainer went full circle in 2024, training Kameko first-crop progeny New Century to Gr.1 glory in Canada for Qatar Racing and recently he won Gr.1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes on British Champions Day for Juddmonte Farms. Andrew has trained Group winners for owners from all around the world and also trained Alcohol Free to four Gr.1 wins before her 5,400,000gns sale in 2022.

Ralph Beckett

Ralph Beckett has won 10 Gr.1 races since 2022 for owners from Hong Kong, the USA and the Middle East. He recently won the Gr.1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Bluestocking, who became a triple Gr.1 winner in 2024, and the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint with Starlust. Ralph also won Gr.1 Irish Oaks with You Got To Me this year. In 2023, his top horse was Westover who won the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and finished second to Equinox, Emily Upjohn and Ace Impact in multiple Gr.1 races, earning him a spot in the world’s Top 10 racehorses of 2023.

Archie Watson saddled his first runner in the second half of 2016 and has already secured top-level races in six countries. The Lambourn-based trainer won the Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes at the York Ebor Festival and Gr.1 Flying Five Stakes in 2024 with Bradsell for HH Sheikh Nasser’s Victorious Racing, for whom Archie had already won the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes and Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes at the Royal meeting with the same horse in 2022 & 2023.

Ed Bethell won his first Group race in his first year as a trainer in 2021. He went on to win his first Gr.1 race in 2023 when Regional won the Sprint Cup at Haydock Park Racecourse. The gelding bought by Bethell in 2021 for only 3,500 guineas has now won over £400,000 for connections. Ed had a Royal Ascot to remember in 2024 when winning the Britannia Stakes with Mickley, while Regional finished second in Gr.1 King Charles III Stakes.

David Menuisier

David Menuisier came to train in Britain because ‘it is the greatest horse racing nation in the world’. He secured his fifth career Gr.1 in 2024, courtesy of Tamfana in the Sun Chariot Stakes. This came almost a year after Sunway's Gr.1 win in the Criterium International for French owner-breeder Guy Pariente and Qatar Racing. David has also won Gr.1 races in Britain and Germany with Wonderful Tonight and Danceteria in recent years.

Ed Walker has been consistent at Group level since he started training, and 2024 has been another successful season. The Lambourn trainer scored Royal Ascot success for the Emir of Qatar before winning the Gr.2 Lowther Stakes with Celandine at the Ebor Festival. Another 2024 highlight came in Gr.1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp when Makarova triumphed on her final start before her broodmare career.

Marco Botti left his natal Italy to start training in Britain back in 2006 and has since won 40 Group/Graded flat races across 8 countries. He recently trained Giavellotto to Group 1 Hong Kong Vase victory for owners based in Italy and the UAE.

Kevin Ryan enjoyed his 16th Gr.1 success in 2024 when Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s Inisherin won the Commonwealth Cup. This trainer-owner combination was already familiar to success at the Royal meeting as Triple Time prevailed in the Queen Anne Stakes last year. On a global level, Kevin has won races including the French Derby, Irish Champion Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. He has also saddled winners of Gr.1 races in all of the last six years.

Charlie Hills produced the remarkable feat to train Khaadem to consecutive Gr.1 successes in the 2023 and 2024 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. In recent years, Charlie was widely known for training world-class sprinter Battaash, who won at Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor Festival. Internationally, his record includes wins at the Breeders’ Cup and the Dubai Racing Carnival.

The father-son training duo won nine Group races in 2023, including two at Meydan with Dubai World Cup runner-up Algiers. They also trained top 2023 juvenile Vandeek, who was unbeaten in four runs for Sheikh Khalid’s KHK Racing. The exciting two-year-old won the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival before scoring a Gr.1 double in the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes. Simon & Ed also recently trained Poker Face to Gr.2 victory in Dubai.

James Fanshawe

James Fanshawe is a trainer with many years of experience and over 20 Group 1 victories on his resumé. He recently won the British Champions Sprint Stakes with Kind Of Blue, who had been purchased privately for Qatar's Wathnan Racing just before the race. A few years ago, James trained Audarya to Group 1 success at the Breeders' Cup.

Jane Chapple-Hyam earned a third career Gr.1 success when Mill Stream won the July Cup in Newmarket recently. In the last three years, Jane has trained winners for owners from Australia and South Africa at major British race meetings. She also trained dual Gr.1 and Royal Ascot winner Saffron Beach before she was retired to stud in 2023.
